On day in October, 2011, Skylight Books lost power but still stayed open to sell books and to host a book talk and signing.

Their skylights provided plenty of light during the daytime bookselling hours. And the staff used wireless credit card machines to handle sales.

To handle the author event at 6:00 p.m., the store sent out tweets asking people who were planning to attend to bring along flashlights. Elissa Schappell, author of Blueprints for Building Better Girls and co-founder of Tin House magazine, was also warned of the power outage and was willing to speak with minimum illumination.

Store manager Kerry Slattery noted that the event was “a reminder that we don’t always have to have modern conveniences–like electricity–to have lively and successful bookselling experiences.”
